The automobile and the information age have converged to create the "Connected Vehicle". Automotive telematics is a multidisciplinary subject that blends wireless, advanced data/voice communications, contact centers, embedded systems, sensors, location-determination technologies, speech recognition, entertainment, the web, and more.

The current diversity of wireless protocols, where infra-red (IR), Bluetooth, and the 802.11a/b/g family of protocols are all widely used in often overlapping situations, has made management of wireless devices complicated. Recently though, software-controlled radio has been emerging as a standard which might resolve this issue.

Another emerging trend is the growth in the use of location-based services such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Eventually, such location-specific services will interface with sites like Google Maps to provide a better driving experience. This is one area where the semantic web can have a positive impact on the lives of individuals.
