68 minutes, 23.5mb, recorded 2003-02-13
For three centuries scientists have looked to mathematics to understand how nature works -- and to create the foundations for technology. But based on his surprising discoveries about simple computer programs, Wolfram, creator of Mathematica and author of A New Kind of Science, has developed a radically new approach. Stephen Wolfram not only addresses many fundamental questions about science and the universe, but also suggests major new directions for technology.

Educated at Eton, Oxford, and Caltech, Wolfram received his Ph.D. from Caltech at the age of 20. In 1981, he was the youngest ever recipient of a MacArthur Prize "Genius" Fellowship. In the late 1980's, he created the ground breaking Mathematica program, and founded Wolfram Research, of which he is CEO.

After more than ten years of highly concentrated work, Wolfram last year published his widely acclaimed book, A New Kind of Science. Its publication has been seen as initiating a paradigm shift of historic importance in science.
