As most of us are aware, road maps are rarely 100% accurate, whether on paper or in electronic form. For most of us it is evident that the best way to get to know a new city is to drive its streets. NAVTEQ uses both simple and more complex tools to build upon those ideas as it ensures accuracy while building on a viable business model.

Using some basic tools, such as voice and video capture, to record the data that's captured during its daily drives, NAVTEQ is able to collect information such as legal (e.g. street directions and hazardous material regulations) and physical (e.g. dividers and medians) barriers. NAVTEQ also exploits more advanced techniques, such as inertial tools and inclinometers to gather data about maximum safe speeds for curves, as well as relying on intelligent updating and automated processing of changes to satellite images to determine when a particular area needs to be re-driven.


Bob Denaro leads the North American Business and Government Solutions Business Unit at NAVTEQ, using his extensive background in the positioning, location and mapping industry to expand NAVTEQ's business in the GIS, Fleet, Enterprise and Government markets. He joined NAVTEQ from Rand McNally & Co. where he was Senior Vice President, General Manager of Global Business Solutions, responsible for a broad range of business-to-business applications and consumer technology products and services.

Prior to joining Rand McNally, Bob was Vice President and Director of Motorola's Consumer Telematics Products, a division he launched after five years heading the company's GPS business. The unit introduced the first integration of wireless data cellular phones, GPS, and real-time computation for the automotive industry.
